The name, Famalco, is derived from Family Mallia, the three brothers who set up the group on December, 26 1994. After establishing itself as a local leader in the fruit importation and distribution sector for over three generations, setting up the Famalco Group was a natural progression for the Mallia family.

The group was created as a solid platform for the consolidation of the family’s long-established fruit importation business, and to facilitate further horizontal and vertical expansion. The original firm, Antonio Mallia & Sons, was set up soon after World War II by the present directors’ grandfather and father. From a modest fruit stall in the busy Liesse Hill of Valletta, on the Grand Harbour waterfront, the firm became a pioneer in the distribution of the local and imported fresh fruits and vegetables.

Once Famalco Group was set up, a decade of rapid expansion ensued. The group built a young, creative and committed central management team, which is constantly seeking new terrain for business development and consolidation. It now includes more than 10 companies, all backed by the centralised team’s expertise on financial and legal matters, human resources, strategic planning, marketing, and public relations.
