For the first time running, Żejt iż-Żejtun will be hosting a half marathon today, Sunday 18th September in appreciation of the grand olive trees our country so proudly hosts. The Żejt iż-Żejtun Marathon forms part of the FOOT: Fit On Olive Trails project and is one out of a series of four taking place in Italy, Greece, Slovenia and Malta respectively. They all form part of HOST: The Heritage of Olive Tree for Sustainable Tourism.

These marathons aim to shed light on the cultivation of olives and the production of olive oil in aid of a more sustainable economy; they also aim to promote the protection of our cultural and natural heritage. In fact, the marathon routes are all planned in a way that allows runners to visit various areas where olives are usually cultivated.
